5-minute Watermelon Hack

YUM

My sister-in-law, Sheila, is my creative sidekick. When I am feeling burnt out, she’s always there to pick me up and inspire me. She’s also an expert in the kitchen.

Sheila recently visited from out of town and showed me this super easy way to slice a watermelon. How many of us have left a watermelon on the counter for way too long because slicing it up is such a hassle? Not anymore! You’ll be excited to cut and enjoy some yummy watermelon in five minutes.

Let’s grab everything.

You’ll need:

  • Watermelon

  • Knife

  • Bowl (similar in size to half of the watermelon)

  • Cutting board that can be moved

A mini watermelon is best for your first time trying this technique, but it works great with melons of all sizes.

Step 1: Place watermelon on the cutting board. Slice the top and bottom (about ¼ to ½ inch) off. This will help the watermelon stand. Stand the watermelon up on the cutting board.

Step 2: Remove the rind from the flesh. Start on the top where the white part of the rind meets the pink flesh. Cut at an angle away from the center of the fruit. Guide your knife with the curve of the watermelon as best as you can until you reach the bottom. Repeat this until all green and white rind is removed. Go back and trim any white rind you may have missed. You should have a nice naked watermelon.

Step 3: Lay the watermelon on its side and slice it vertically down the middle.

Step 4: Place the watermelon, cut side down, on the cutting board. Make vertical cuts ½ to 1 inch apart. Turn your cutting board without moving the watermelon and make perpendicular cuts.

Step 5: Place your bowl over the watermelon and flip the cutting board. I like to absorb the juice on the board with a towel or pour it into a cup to minimize the mess. The watermelon should be perfectly set in the bowl and ready to be eaten as sticks.

This technique is perfect for a picnic, at the river, on a boat, or at a backyard get-together. Or if you’re like us, just for all the time. LOL, we don’t have a boat.

I hope you enjoy this quick watermelon hack! I know I’m never going back to cutting a watermelon like I used to. Stay sweet, friends!

Always and Whatever
